Don’t Overpay Interest: How to Re-Compute Your GSTR-3B Liabilities Correctly

To assist taxpayers with accurate self-assessment, the GST portal features an auto-calculator for interest due to delayed filing of GSTR-3B. This interest is calculated based on the tax liability discharged and the specific breakup provided in the return. While this system is designed to streamline compliance, a recent technical update allows for manual re-computation to ensure accuracy.

How the Interest Calculator Works

  • Automatic Calculation: The system computes interest on delayed filings and auto-populates it in Table 5.1 of the following tax period’s GSTR-3B.
  • Similar to Late Fees: This process mirrors how late fees are collected—calculated after a return is filed and then demanded in the subsequent period.
  • Verification: Taxpayers can verify the exact breakup of these interest charges by downloading the System Generated GSTR 3B PDF from their dashboard.

Addressing Recent Technical Glitches

A technical issue was identified affecting the February 2026 tax period. For some taxpayers, the interest shown in their March 2026 return may have been calculated incorrectly. Specifically, the system may have failed to account for the minimum cash balance available in the Electronic Cash Ledger, which is a requirement under Rule 88B(1) of the CGST Rules, 2017.

Steps to Re-Compute and Correct Interest

If you notice a discrepancy in your auto-populated interest figures, follow these steps to resolve it:

  • Use the Re-Compute Tool: A new “RE-COMPUTE INTEREST” button is now available under Table 5.1 of GSTR-3B.
  • Trigger Recalculation: Clicking this button prompts the system to recalculate interest based on the latest updated parameters and cash ledger rules.
  • Check the Updated PDF: Once re-computed, the revised interest amount will be reflected in an updated System Generated GSTR-3B PDF.
  • Manual Update Required: Taxpayers must manually edit the figures in Table 5.1 to match the revised values from the updated PDF.
  • Minimum Value Constraint: Note that the manually entered interest amount cannot be less than the re-computed value shown in the system-generated PDF.
